My Computer Keeps Freezing

By now, you are probably tired of hearing, "Help me! My computer keeps freezing!" whether it is coming from your kid, your husband, or from inside your own head. Sometimes you just want to yell, "Slow computer, fix yourself!" Stop yelling. The older a computer gets, the more you will start to notice it takes longer to boot up, and maintenance it is probably going to need.

Over time, computers pile up information, programs, and plain inefficiency. By default, many programs try to tell you they need to start every time Windows starts. Sometimes they do not even tell you and just go ahead and do it anyway. Other programs ask politely if you would like them to start when Windows starts. This is all fine and dandy until you have so many programs starting at the same time your computer keeps freezing.

If you share a computer with the rest of your family, you might not know everything that is being installed. It could be hard to keep track of how often and how many programs are being installed onto your system. Luckily, there is a simple way to find out what programs are trying to startup with Windows. Simply, click the 'Start' button (or circular Windows button on Windows 7) and type "msconfig" into the 'Run' bar, and hit 'Enter.' This will bring up your Windows system configuration. Click the 'Startup' tab, and you will notice a list of programs, some with check-boxes checked and others not checked. Some of these programs are required for Windows to run correctly and should be left alone. A good rule of thumb is that if you do not recognize the name, do not mess with it. Other programs have obvious names like OpenOffice, AIM, MSN Messenger, or Adobe Photoshop. Uncheck the ones you recognize and that you do not want to start with Windows. This does not disable their use; it only provides Windows a window of opportunity (pun intended) to breathe and finish loading what it needs to load upon initial startup. Restart Windows to apply the changes, and the same window you were just in will pop back up. Check the box that asks you if you made the changes and click 'OK.'

Finding a free registry fix [http://porkporkpork.com/tips-to-avoid-having-a-broken-computer/] online can also repair problems with your computer's registry and possibly fix it if your computer keeps freezing. Editing MSConfig will by no means fix a broken computer [http://porkporkpork.com/my-computer-keeps-freezing-tips-to-fix-it/], but it might not make you pull your hair out while waiting for all your programs to load when you start your computer.
